Why Your Fear of Success is Keeping You From Your Purpose

As a purpose coach, I help people navigate their fears often. In a prior episode, Slay Your Fears, I discussed fear and how it manifests itself into our lives. Within that episode I also talked about how I think at the root of most people’s fear is their fear of failure or their fear of success. Today, I’m going to dive a little deeper into the fear of success.

The fear of success is crippling and the worst part is it’s rarely on anyone’s radar. In this episode you will get a better understanding of the fear of success and how it operates.

The Fear of Success

The fear of success is when someone has a fear of succeeding, but it isn’t succeeding in of itself. What they actually fear is what comes along with success.

They fear popularity and being known, they fear people changing around them.

Their fears are legitimate because people really do change around you when you do things like start to make money, do more service in the community, win awards, etc. For some reason, people will feel entitled to your success, which is absurd.

Ultimately though, the fear of success keeps you from your purpose because you end up either doing nothing OR self-sabotaging.

How it Shows Up

A fear of success can manifest itself in many different ways, but as a purpose coach, here is where I see it happen the most.

  1. You set low or no goals
  2. Distractions
  3. Procrastination
  4. Take yourself out of the game by sabotaging your opportunities to succeed
  5. Quitting

How to Combat It

The good news is that you don’t have to live with this. You can attack your fear of success.

  1. Spend some time understanding where your fear of success is coming from
  2. One way that I actively combat the fear of success is by focusing on the work and the journey as opposed to focusing on someone’s potential response to what I’m doing.
  3. Last, but definitely not least, is to visualize your success. See yourself successful, without the things that make you fearful.

Conclusion

Each episode of The Purpose Collective Podcast is designed to either:

  1. Help you discover your purpose by exposing you to the fundamentals of purpose and how it works, as well as highlighting the journey’s of other Believers with discovering their purpose
  2. Help you walk fearlessly in your purpose by providing you with tips for handling obstacles that try to hold you back.

The fear of success falls within the latter category. Don’t let it hold you back.

If you fall within category one, then I created a special resource just for you. It lays out the mistakes you may be making on your journey and gives you specific actions to get you started properly on your journey. You can download it here.
