What if I told you… that some of the most respected, celebrated organizations in our culture — are actually spiritual prisons? The enemy has mastered the art of deception — making captivity look like community, and bondage look like belonging.
Fraternities and sororities promise brotherhood, sisterhood, service, and empowerment… but beneath the surface lies something far more sinister — a spiritual covenant disguised as culture.
This is deeper than letters. This is war — a war for your soul. And the greatest weapon Satan uses… is the illusion that you’re free.

Encounter With God
The spirit of the Lord came into my living room and instantly I was stuck. It was like me and my couch were glued together because I just wouldn’t move. I began to get downloads about the dream and understood that the woman in the house represented members of sororities that I would rescue out of the kind of captivity that leads to destruction. I heard the spirit of God speak to me.
Captive
The word God used when speaking to me about the people I needed to set free, which included members of fraternities and sororities, was jarring to me.
God called His children in fraternities and sororities CAPTIVES and I heard “set the captives free.” At the time, which remember is August 2023, I didn’t focus on the word, I focused on the call and how I was going to execute what God told me to do. I even hyperfocused on the weight of the call a bit because it was heavy. I just sat there crying because I had never had an encounter like that with the spirit of the Lord. I had only heard about them.
Sometime after that I realized that the encounter was a full circle moment for me because when God called me into ministry in 2020, He used the word captive as well. I was called into ministry through 2 Timothy 2:24-26, NLT.
“A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people. Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth. Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants.”
Six months later...
I received a prophetic word from someone I did not know who was talking to me about captives yet again.
Recently the word captive started to stick out to me because in God’s eyes members of these organizations are really captives. I looked up the Greek definition and it just said captive so then I looked up the definition in Webster’s dictionary and I was shook. Here’s how it defined the word captive.
It says a captive is: 1) taken and held as or as if a prisoner of war; 2) a captive is someone who is held under the control of another but having the appearance of independence.
It was this definition that did it for me. Because we don’t necessarily see it all the time, I think we forget that we are in a war. We were enlisted into this war as soldiers the moment we received salvation.
There is a quote from Sun Tzu, in his book The Art of War that shines a light on this. It says: “All warfare is based on deception.” – Sun Tzu. Satan has found a way to wage war against humanity by making the captivity and bondage of fraternities and sororities appealing. The result is, not only are the people in these orgs prisoners of a great spiritual war, but they are fighting against the people who are trying to free them.
This was a powerful and sobering revelation that connects spiritual warfare, deception, and captivity in a way that I had never really seen explored or broken down. So I want to explore captivity a little deeper through these key elements and layers.
1. The Nature of Captivity (Spiritual vs. Physical).
Captivity isn’t always visible. Many captives look free—they can move, speak, they can and DO post on social media, and they go to work—but spiritually, they are bound…in shackles. Remember that scripture from 2 Timothy that God used to call me into ministry? He basically laid out that His desire is for those in captivity to learn the truth so that they can come to their senses and escape the devil’s trap of captivity. Because although they LOOK free and have the appearance of thriving, they are actually being used by the devil to do whatever he wants.
2 Timothy 2:26 (NLT) – “…come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants..”
Jesus told us straight up in John 8:34 that, “Everyone who sins is a slave to sin.”
There is an illusion of freedom that comes with being part of something “elite,” “empowering,” and “exclusive,” while actually being in bondage to unseen spiritual forces.
2. Captivity Begins With Agreement
Another element and layer of captivity, and this may be exclusive to spiritual captivity, but this form of captivity begins with agreement. Satan cannot enslave without consent—he needs agreement or covenant (spoken, written, or symbolic). The rituals, oaths, pledges, songs, and hand signs that fraternities and sororities do are forms of agreement in the spiritual realm. These agreements open spiritual doors that give the enemy legal access to a person’s life and the lives of their children’s children.
This brings me to the next layer of captivity which is the enemy’s plot to have us voluntarily surrender to him and his agenda.
3. The Strategy of Voluntary Surrender.
There is another quote from The Art of War that says, “The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.” This parallels how satan often wins battles and wars against humanity without confrontation. He uses the concept of voluntary surrender disguised as empowerment.
Satan rarely drags people into bondage if he can get them to pledge allegiance willingly.
4. The Purpose of Captivity in Warfare.
The goal of taking captives is not just to restrain them and prevent them from fighting against them. No, the goal in spiritual captivity is to use the captive for the captor’s agenda. The enemy uses captives to recruit more captives. Now the captive has been turned, often unknowingly, into an agent of bondage. This explains why some members defend their orgs so passionately—they are protecting their captor and his kingdom.
Another layer of captivity is the psychological and emotional component.
5. Psychological and Emotional Captivity.
Beyond the spiritual, there’s mental bondage. People often tie their identity to the organization. Leaving feels like betrayal or death. One of THE most common questions I am asked by people who are exploring leaving a fraternity or sorority is whether I still have a relationship with the people I knew who are still in the sorority. The enemy has a way of creating this environment where backlash and being ostracized is a very real possibility, and some people choose to stay captives in these organizations in order to avoid experiencing it.
The next layer and element of captivity is the strategy of subduing without fighting.
6. Freedom Comes By Revelation and Renunciation.
Deliverance from captivity and bondage starts when the truth is revealed and accepted. Jesus told us in God’s word that when we know the truth, the truth will set us free. That word “know” means to perceive and understand. We must understand that truth.
John 8:32 – “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
Let that be your prayer strategy as you are praying for members of fraternities and sororities to come out. Ask God to give them revelation of the truth of what their organization truly is in His eyes.
Which brings me to the final layer of captivity that I want to talk about which is God’s desire to free captives.
7. God Desires to Free Captives. Isaiah 49:24–25
“Can the prey be taken from the mighty, or the captives of a tyrant be rescued?… I will contend with those who contend with you, and I will save your children.” God sent Jesus to deliver us! Jesus came to set the captives free!
Luke 4:18, NKJV. No one is too deep in bondage for God to deliver.

God’s Judgment of Idols and Idolatry

It’s so very important to get the word out about this topic because judgment is coming to the members and the organizations. I know I focused on the war from the captives standpoint, but the false gods embedded into the foundations of these organizations wage war against God and the use the sacrifice and worship of the members as leverage and power against God.
Here’s what I want you to remember…
Captivity doesn’t always look like chains.
Sometimes it looks like belonging.
Sometimes it looks like legacy.
Sometimes… it looks like light.
But as Sun Tzu said, ‘All warfare is based on deception.’
The enemy’s greatest achievement isn’t just enslaving people — it’s convincing them that they’re free while they serve him.
The truth is, you can’t fight a war you don’t know you’re in.
That’s why so many remain in bondage — defending the very systems designed to keep them bound.
But Jesus came for the captives.
If anything in this message stirred you — that’s not coincidence. That’s God extending an invitation to freedom.
Freedom starts with revelation, then repentance, then renunciation.
It’s time to break agreement with anything that exalts itself against the knowledge of God — even if it’s something the world celebrates.
So ask yourself:
Am I truly free… or just living the illusion of freedom?
God’s creation being held as captives by the enemy truly saddens God. This isn’t something that’s often talked about but this is the kind of thing that God cried about.
Time is running out.
