Spiritual warfare is a reality that every Christian faces on some level. It’s a battle that’s fought on a daily basis, and it’s one that requires strategy, tactics, and the right weapons if we’re going to come out on top. The Bible tells us that we’re not fighting against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this age, and against spiritual hosts of wickedness in heavenly places.
Every day, Christians face spiritual battles on multiple fronts. We battle against the temptation to sin, against the lies of the enemy, against the fear that tries to grip our hearts, and against the doubts that try to undermine our faith. We also battle against the cultural norms that try to pull us away from God, against the peer pressure that tries to get us to conform, and against the spiritual apathy that can creep in and steal our passion for the Lord. We face battles in our minds, in our hearts, and in our relationships.
What Is Spiritual Warfare?
Spiritual warfare encompasses a lot of things. Author and spiritual warfare strategist Melinda Michelle defines spiritual warfare as “The celestial combat that is fought in the invisible spiritual realm that runs parallel to and manifests in the natural realm. It cannot be seen (by the untrained or ungifted eye), but the effects can be felt by humanity.”
Spiritual warfare is very serious and it shows up in a lot of different ways. The enemy typically attacks where a person is most vulnerable, where their response is most predictable, or he will attack what a person values. Let me briefly break down each one of these starting with vulnerability.
● Vulnerable
One place that everyone is vulnerable is their body. So, the enemy may strike a person with sickness or illness as a means of attack, or with injury. A physical attack, sickness, or illness will slow down the average person and for some others it will completely stop them from doing whatever they were doing for God that led to them being attacked—because now they’re focusing on recovering or they’re fighting for their life.
● Predictable
When it comes to the enemy attacking someone in an area where they are predictable, he does this to provoke a response that makes the person open to whatever his scheme is to lead that person to destruction in some way, shape, or form.
There’s someone I know who the enemy used to constantly attack with offense. This person was so easily offended. Offense is the bait of Satan. John Bevere had a book on this very topic.
● Value
When it comes to things we value, this one is pretty obvious. If a person idolizes money, then the enemy will attack their finances.
What Gives Us the Ability to Wage War?
Before I get into some spiritual warfare weapons that are useful in spiritual battles, I want to first share with you what gives us the ability to wage war and fight in the spirit realm in the first place.
What gives us this ability is our authority. Authority is the power and ability to do as one pleases.
Spiritual Warfare Weapons
Now it’s time to dive into these weapons. This is a bit of a deeper exploration that assumes you already know the weapons of the word of God, which is arguably the most powerful, it assumes you already know about prayer, worship, and fasting. If not, let me know in the comments and I’ll send you some prior episodes I recorded speaking on those or I may even just record some new resources, but let me know. These weapons I’m sharing with you are weapons you will use during your prayer time.
1. Blindness
The first spiritual warfare weapon that every Christian needs to know is blindness. Let’s look at two biblical examples of this weapon being used. The first example is from Genesis 19:1-5; 9-11, NKJV.
Two angels went to Sodom and ended up staying at Lot”s house. Men surrounded the house and demanded the angels be brought outside so that they could have sex with them. When Lot refused, they were about to attack him. However, the angels struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they became weary trying to find the door.
the next example of blindness being used as a weapon is with Elisha. I LOVE this example. It’s from 2 Kings 6. Take a read and let me know that you think.
2. Confusion
Confusion is mentioned A LOT in scriptures. We first see it come up in Genesis 11:7 when God confused the language of the people after they started building the tower of Babel. We see it mentioned again in Exodus 14:24, AMP when the Egyptians were chasing the Isarelites. God looked down on the Egyptians and put them in a state of confusion.
God confused the Philistine army so much in 1 Samuel 14:20, CSB that they began to fight each other when they were supposed to be fighting Saul and the Israelites.
If confusion is the weapon you want to deploy, then David gives us a great example of how to use it in Psalm 55:9, CSB. As He is praying, David says, “Lord, confuse and confound their speech.” If you are going up against an evil altar, ask God to confuse the spirits operating at that altar. Make them forget their target and turn on each other God. PERIOD.
3. Money
Alright, so now that we’ve warmed up, I’m about to hit you with one that’s going to stretch your mind a bit. The next spiritual warfare weapon that every Christian needs to know is money. Money acts as a witness and speaks for us or against us.
We already know that money is a sacrifice honored and accepted by God because Cornelius’ consistent alms to the power coupled with his prayer led to God sending an angel to him. And that led to the gospel spreading to Gentiles aka those of us who were not descendants of the Israelites lol. When the angel visited Cornelius in Acts 10:4, he told him that his alms and prayers had come up as an offering before God.
When it comes to money being a spiritual warfare weapon...
When it comes to money being a spiritual weapon, the tithe specifically is an extremely powerful weapon of warfare which is why the devil fights you so hard on it. The reason tithe is so powerful is because it testifies that Jesus lives! Hebrews 7:8, NKJV says “Here mortal men receive tithes, but there he receives them, of whom it is witnessed that he lives.” You can use your tithe as evidence of your belief in Jesus. The Greek word that we get the English word witness from that’s used there means “to give testimony.” When you tithe, your money is testifying that you believe Jesus lives as your high priest, mediator, and intercessor and it connects you to the present day ministry of Jesus. That means it’s testimony AGAINST the devil. Thus, your weapon!
4. Praise
Moving right along. The fourth spiritual warfare weapon that every Christian needs to know is praise. Praise is a bad mamma jamma. There are examples of praise being used as a powerful weapon in multiple places in God’s word. One of my favorites is in 2 Chronicles 20:20-23.
For context, Jehoshaphat was the king of Judah during this time and he just found out that not one, not two, but three different tribes were coming to wage war against him. Jehoshphat was spooked so he decided to seek God about it and to call a fast while waiting to hear from the Lord.
When the king and all of Judah got together, the Spirit of the Lord came on a man by the name of Jahaziel. Through Jahaziel, God tells Judah that He is with them and they don’t even have to fight this battle. They just needed to show up. Jehoshaphat is like, “bet,” he stood up and addressed the people. 2 Chronicles 20:20-23, CSB
Verse 22 tells us that, “The moment they began their shouts and praises, the Lord set an ambush against the Ammonites, Moabites, and the inhabitants of Mount Seir who came to fight against Judah, and they were defeated.”
5. Winds
The next spiritual warfare weapon that every Christian needs to know are the winds of the earth. This one may stretch you as well but if you can get a revelation of this weapon then it will be very useful to you.
I want to bring your attention toMark 4:35-39, NKJV. Here’s what it says:
On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” 36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.
So we just saw that in the middle of a horrible storm, Jesus rebuked the wind, demanded peace from the sea, and commanded it to be still. That word rebuke there means to decide upon or rule on as judge; it also means to sentence or condemn, or to admonish.
I know we’ve heard and have even read this text A LOT but I want to slow us down so that we can really see what’s happening here. Instead of praying and asking God to calm the storm. Jesus is addressing components of the storm like they’re beings that have the ability to listen and follow commands—not just any commands, but commands from humans. Why does He do that? Is that not odd to you?!
He does that because creation IS alive and it hears and responds to us. God put into Creation the ability to listen to the voice of man and obey. We see this in many places in the Bible.
We see it in Genesis when Abel’s blood cried out to God from the grave after Cain murdered him. We see it with the sun and the moon when 5 kings gathered together to wage war against the Israelites and Joshua said: “Sun, stand still over Gibeon; And Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.” God’s word tells us that the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the people had revenge on their enemies. Joshua 10:12-13, NKJV
The last example of creation listening that I want to highlight is in Joshua 24:25-27, CSB. It says:
18 “For I consider [from the standpoint of faith] that the sufferings of the present life are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is about to be revealed to us and in us! 19 For [even the whole] creation [all nature] waits eagerly for the children of God to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration and futility, not willingly [because of some intentional fault on its part], but by the will of Him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will also be freed from its bondage to decay [and gain entrance] into the glorious freedom of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been moaning together as in the pains of childbirth until now.” Romans 8:18-22, AMP
Coming back to the winds, not only do the winds hear, but each wind has a prophetic purpose. They each have a distinct assignment on earth. Scripture gives us insight on the prophetic purpose and function of each wind.
Matthew 24:31, CSB outlines how the four winds collectively will be used when Jesus returns. It says:
Without going too deep into the four winds in this episode, I want to highlight one wind that can be used as an effective weapon against the enemy and that is the east wind. We see God use the east wind multiple times in the Bible to bring His judgment.
One of my favorite places in the text where the east wind is used is in Exodus, specifically chapter 10:12-13 which is during the time when Moses was asking Pharoah to let the Israelites go and he said no. Verse twelve says:
“The Lord then said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt, and the locusts will come up over it and eat every plant in the land, everything that the hail left.” 13 So Moses stretched out his staff over the land of Egypt, and the Lord sent an east wind over the land all that day and through the night. By morning the east wind had brought in the locusts.” Exodus 10:12-13, CSB
When you are in the throes of spiritual warfare, call on a might east wind to blow over your enemy so that God will send His judgment their way.
Being equipped with spiritual weapons is crucial if we’re going to overcome the challenges that we face as Christians. When we are equipped with the right weapons, we’re able to stand firm against the enemy’s attacks, to resist his temptations, and to stay strong in the face of opposition. When we are equipped with the right weapons, we’re able to walk in the freedom and the power of Christ, unencumbered by the weight of sin and unforgiveness.

Now, I do want to give you a word of warning. Remember that demonic spirits and the spirit realm in general respond to authority and there are levels of authority. The effectiveness of these weapons is determined by your authority. Some things that have an effect on your authority are 1) your obedience and, 2) the strength of your altar which is determined by your priesthood. Elijah could not call fire down from Heaven until he rebuilt the altar of the Lord!
