Types of Claims

Sin
  • Sin means to fall short; morally or ethically not reaching a standard
  • Sin is a trespass against the holiness of God

Everyone who commits sin practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. You know that he was revealed so that he might take away sins, and there is no sin in him. Everyone who remains in him does not sin; everyone who sins has not seen him or known him. Little children, let no one deceive you. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.  The one who commits sin is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God was revealed for this purpose: to destroy the devil’s works.  Everyone who has been born of God does not sin, because his seed remains in him; he is not able to sin, because he has been born of God.  This is how God’s children and the devil’s children become obvious. Whoever does not do what is right is not of God...

Transgressions
  • Hebrew word means a revolt; rebellion; to break away from authority; to step across a boundary
  • Trangressions are a trespass against the authority of God
Deceit
  • Deceit means treachery
  • It is a sin against others
Iniquity
  • Iniquity is the history of sin in the bloodline
  • Question: Why do we need to repent for and renounce the sins of our ancestors?
  • See Leviticus 26:36-40
Covenant
  • Covenants go on in perpetuity until someone breaks them
  • Example of covenant affecting generations
  • 2 Samuel 21:1-14
  • During King David’s reign he experienced 3 consecutive years of famine and eventually asked God why. God said, it’s because of Saul and his bloodthirsty house of murders. Joshua was deceived into entering into a covenant with the Gibeonites, his enemy.  Saul became king and broke the covenant with the Gibeonites by murdering them. David asked what he could do to atone for the murders. The Gibeonites named their price, which was they wanted 7 of Saul’s male descendants handed over to them so that they could hand them. David did everything the king commanded and after that, God was receptive to prayer for the land and the famine. The covenant, although an evil one made using deception, was still speaking against the Israelites.
